Our History

Wombat Occasional Childcare Centre was established in July 1979 and operated in the Community Centre in Gymea as Gymea Occasional Care. Several years down the track, Miranda Westfield Shoppingtown and Sutherland Shire Council decided there was a need in the community for a convenient, licensed occasional child care centre. Westfield constructed a suitably positioned, purpose built child care facility and in 1992, Gymea Occasional Care moved into their new centre. Gymea Occasional Care came to be known as Wombat Occasional Childcare and has since successfully operated in the same centre. Over the years some things have changed and we now share our building with MOOSH in what is now called the Miranda Children's Services building.

Why Choose Wombat Occasional Childcare?

Wombat works with many different types of families and community services within our local area.

Some reasons why the different types of families we work with choose to enrol their child at our service include:

  • Parents wishing to introduce their child to the child care environment with the benefit of optional shorter hours and the advantage of extending hours when the child (and parent) is ready.

  • Shift work - whether your coming off a shift or going on a shift many parents find Wombats perfect for the parent/child exchange or just to catch up on some sleep.

  • Respite - because sometimes we all need a break.

  • Flexibility of having access to child care without being locked in to specific days, hours or costly fees.

  • Child care which allows parents to meet their work-related and non-work related commitments.

  • Emergency care - when the unexpected happens.

  • Comfort knowing their child attends a quality, small, friendly, centre based, community child care service.

What is Wombat Occasional Childcare?

We are a community based, non profit child care centre that is managed by a parent committee. We cater for 29 children (at any one time) aged from 0 - 6 years old. Our family group setting provides opportunities for children to develop social skills while supporting creativity, exploration and investigation across all areas of development.
